10 Basic Cricket Rules You Need Know:

For becoming a healthy cricket spectator, you must have complete knowledge of the rules of cricket. They are very basic to introduce you to cricket.

1. One cricket game comprises of two teams and 22 players:

In any format  , there are always two teams that compete with each other on the ground. Both the teams must have 11 players with them on the field. One is the captain of the team. This is the primary rule of cricket that must be followed. This rule is ensured by the team’s captain. So according to the International Cricket Council, the two teams facing each other must comprise of total 22 players.

2. The decision of the umpire is final:

The umpire plays the main role in a cricket match. The decision made by the umpires is final. No negotiations can be made in the umpires call. Every player must accept the umpire decision. If any person fails to follow the umpire’s decision, then he is directed back to the team’s captain. The team captain either remove him from the team or set him according to the discipline standard.

3. One over comprises of 6 balls:

This is a rule of cricket set by the International Cricket Council that there will be 6 balls in one over. If the batsman hits the ball, the ball is considered. If there are no wide balls in an over then the 6 balls done by the bowler to the batsman make an over. After each over the bowler will be changed and another member from the same team will come for bowling.

4. 4 runs are considered as the ball hits the boundary:

When a batsman hits the ball and it hits the boundary, then the team will get 4 runs. So it is a rule in cricket that the ball hitting the boundary equals 4 runs. A ball that goes beyond the boundary will score 6 runs and that will be considered as a sixer for that team.

5. All professional matches are of limited duration:

There is a fixed duration for professional cricket matches. The test format matches are known as professional matches. It is a rule made in cricket that these matches will be played only in the daytime. So, the timing of these professional matches is set between 11 am and 6 pm. So, this is also a rule of cricket that the time duration for these matches is fixed. They are set to be played for 6 hours every day. It can go for 5 days by playing 6 hours a day.

6. Extra runs can be made on overthrow:

If a fielder overthrows a ball then additional runs can be made by the batsman. It can be continued until the fielder returns the ball to the bowler or the wicketkeeper. If the ball hits the boundary by overthrowing the ball, then four runs will be made. The extra runs can be added in the four runs if the boundary is made. So, overthrowing the ball can bring benefits for the team doing batting.

7. Penalty on time-wasting on the field:

When the wicket falls on any team, then the new player should come on the field in just two minutes. If the next player takes much time in coming to the field, then he will be out from the team. As test matches already are fa long duration, the players are not given chance to waste the time. It is penalized to waste the time on the fields.

8. Duration of a cricket match is negotiated:

The duration of the cricket match can be negotiated by both teams. The negotiation can be made before the start of the game. This rule is made because sometimes the teams agree on playing for a short duration. This happens when the teams agree to play the same 2 innings match but the overs are limited.

9. The field placement decision is optional:

The placement of the team members on the field is optional. The team captain decides to place the team players on various field locations. There are many field positions to place the members on. So, a complete strategy is made by the team caption for field placement. But it is optional and can be done for knocking out another team.

10. Batsman runs with his bat for run-scoring:

The batsman runs between both stumps to score the runs. While taking a run, the bat must be in the hands of the batsman. If during scoring, the batsman is away from the stumps while running then he can stretch his hand to place the bat on the line. If the bat passes the line even the player is away from the line then the run will be counted.

So, all the rules must be followed by every player. If any rule is violated by any team player, then he will be out from the team. That player will not be allowed to play any further matches. These rules are set by the International Cricket Council and apply to all the teams in the world. Different format matches are played including T20 International, ODI format, and test format matches. These rules should be followed for all the cricket format matches. So have a look at all of them and get an insight into the cricket matches rules.
